Bourgeois State and the Rise of Social Democracy in Spain

Spain has witnessed a remarkable series of events: the decay and dismantling of the military dictatorship of Francisco Franco in 1975 after 36 years of rule; its replacement by a democratically elected government under a new constitution in 1979; and the election of the Socialist party to a majority in the Spanish Parliament in 1982, 1986, and most recently in 1989. In the short span of fourteen years, Spain transformed itself from military dicta­ torship to one of the most stable parliamentary democracies in Europe.
