ABSTRACT

The analysis of transference reactions is considered to be the most potent tool in psychoanalytic therapy. By experiencing simultaneously a past relation ship as externalized onto a present inappropriate object, the patient is enabled to distinguish reality from past memory, achieve a genuine insight, and alter basic character structure. Unfortunately, in the classic psychoanalytic situation the arousal of such reactions may require many months to reach full fruition before interpretation can be effective. Hypnoanalytic treatment (e.g., analysis within the hypnotic modality) sometimes offers the opportunity to evoke transferences in a shorter period of time, even if more working through in the conscious State may be required (Brown & Fromm, 1986; Fromm, 1968b).
