ABSTRACT

A typical match day performance specification for the pitch and outfield in a first class New Zealand cricket ground may be as follows. Recent research carried out by the New Zealand Sports Turf Institute illustrates the importance of surface friction and condition of the ball on pitch pace. Three common clay types used in cricket pitches are; In addition to clay percentage and mineralogy, the soil selection process should also consider the sand and organic matter contents in a sample. Experience has demonstrated that it is practical to mix soils for improved pitch performance. In order to determine renovation needs, the curator should collect and analyse soil cores from the wicket block. The renovation program can be planned once it is known what is needed to bring the block up to standard. In general, major renovation work should be targeted for the post-season, to allow the off-season for recovery of turf cover and/or consolidation.
