ABSTRACT

The relations between a port complex, the urban area which it serves, and the inland territory on which it depends are highly complicated and vary from city to city. This is, in fact, a question of reciprocal influences which are the result of a combination of geographical and historical factors. These relationships are not only continually modified during the span of operation by the economic, political and social circumstances of a country, but are also affected by the international economic situation and the development of navigational techniques and land transport systems.
