ABSTRACT

The dualistic man dominates the scene in the developing societies of Asia. Hence, in the modernisation and development, Asian societies are patchy, lop-sided, and restricted. The elites of the Asian societies, also affected by this dualism, have succeeded in introducing certain modern scientific products and procedures into their societies but have failed to introduce the scientific outlook. That is why bebalisma still prevails and the fools dominate the scene. These dualistic elites are also what Raymond Aron called bankrupt elites. ‘In our day an elite which fails to make use of technical resources to raise the standard of life and increase the wealth of the community is indeed a bankrupt elite. It is natural that a party, representative of the peasants and workers, who are in poverty because the productivity of their labour is low, should come forward to take over from the soldiers, bankers or great landowners who prefer to spend their profits on luxurious American cars rather than on tractors or machine tools.’ 1
