ABSTRACT
Shrove Tuesday brings in its wake a tradition of carnival and pancakes. But carnival never existed much in England, and is almost extinct in France, or at least in Paris; the days of Cortèges, of Processions on the Boulevards, of confetti, of masks, of streets closed to the traffic and devoted to fun are over, and we must go to Nice or to Germany if we want to see picturesque sights.
