ABSTRACT

THE fauna of any part of the globe is determined mainly by its climate and by the opportunity that animals have had to get there. Let us take the second cause first. Why are there no monkeys, elephants or antelopes in Madagascar, while these animals abound 1 in the neighbouring continent of Africa ? Simply because Madagascar, which was previously joined to Africa, became separated from that continent before the animals named had evolved, or at any rate before they had spread to that part of Africa.
