ABSTRACT

When the Emperor Alexius was raised to the rank of Domestic by Nicephorus, Botaniates, he took a certain Travlos, a Manichaean into his staff of intimate servants and after he had honoured him with Christian baptism, he married him to one of the Empress' maidservants. When the Emperor Alexius had settled the matter of the Manichaean as a secondary business, he secured their allegiance by a treaty Bohemund, meanwhile was still lingering in Valona. When the Emperor Alexius received the news concerning Bryennius and the other Counts, and heard that some had preferred to serve the Emperor, and the others had dispersed in different directions, he sought his mother-country, crossed to Lombardy and found his father at Salernum, and by inveighing bitterly against the Emperor, aroused his father's ire against him.
