ABSTRACT
The Boxer outbreak in China recalled Loti to the East before he could have passed much more than a month at home. He had been promoted capitaine de frégate, in 1898, and sailed now from Cherbourg on August 2nd, 1900, as first aide-de-camp to Vice-Admiral Pottier, the commander of the French naval forces taking part in the allied demonstration against China.
