ABSTRACT

Parts of the old Biblical land are among the countries which offer some of the world's most stark testimonials of soil erosion and land exploitation. If the Biblical portion of Egypt is included, the entire area of Bible lands would be about equivalent to that of New York and Maryland, or less than that of England and Scotland combined. Dr. W. C. Lowdermilk, an eminent student of land use in the Biblical regions as well as other areas, states: 'Out of the land of Mesopotamia came the stories of the "Flood" and of Noah and the Ark; Jonah and Nineveh and of the "Tower of Babel". Dr. Lowdermilk writes that 'The Promised Land', which three thousand years ago was 'flowing with milk and honey', has been so devastated by soil erosion that the soils have been swept off fully half the area of the hill lands.
