ABSTRACT

The reader will have noted, in the perusal of preceding portions of this work, that ladies, both old and young, have had to submit themselves with humiliation to the birch. In ladies’ boarding schools a century ago, the Rod was unsparingly used, and even up till about the year 1830, young ladies were whipt at school. In order that we may be as chronological as possible, we insert here an account of boarding-school discipline at the end of the last century. It is taken from a letter written twelve years ago, and which is brimful of information on the subject:—
