ABSTRACT

On 24th February 1943 Mr. Eden, in the British House of Commons, made a cordial reference to Arab steps towards political harmony. Great Britain was still in need of the sympathy of the Arab nations although her most anxious period of the war was by then over. But certainly it was not political interest alone that moved England to this declaration, part of her motive was the long-standing mutual attraction between her and the Arabs. With the exception of Transjordan none of the Arab states had an effective modernized army. The Jews on the other hand had learnt modern fighting in the ranks of the Allies during World War Two. The Arab armies fought at the end of long lines of communication, the Jews on interior lines. With the Arab failure in Palestine ‘Azam Pasha’s noisy organization nearly dissolved. He himself had to disappear from it.
