ABSTRACT

At 7.30 p.m. on 30 August, and in the company of Ambassador Ahmed Maher, I arrived at Almaza Military Airfield, followed by the separate arrivals of members of the National Security Council. 1 When we were all together a Soviet-made Antonov aircraft belonging to the air force flew us to Ismailia. On our arrival we drove to “L’île Des Chevaliers”, where President Sadat’s rest-house was located. Just as the car was about to stop at the entrance to the rest-house, I spotted Ambassador Ussama El Baz standing near the building. I could not understand why he was in Ismailia, since I had met him only the day before at the Ministry, when he had said nothing about it. I waved to him and he waved back, then he seemed to disappear into thin air.
