ABSTRACT

It was after midnight when I retired with Boutros Ghali to our bedroom at the conclusion of the meeting. We donned our pyjamas, but sleep eluded us both, so I sat on my bed while Boutros did likewise on the bed facing mine. I began to speak – or rather to think aloud. I was deeply concerned (I told Boutros) at what had taken place in the last twenty-four hours. Sadat had presented our project (The Framework of Peace) to Carter and Begin and – although I had advised against it – had discussed it with them at the start of the Conference. However, he was perfectly entitled to do so, for I had no way of imposing my views on him. “The account he gave us yesterday [I went on], left us with the impression that he had succeeded, in the presence of the United States President, in making a good case for the Egyptian project.”
