ABSTRACT

The legation of Yemen in Amman, which was loyal to the royalists, requested in the name of the imam an urgent meeting of the League council. The League mission was informed that Amman had ended its co-operation and aid for the Yemeni royalists and that establishment of normal relations with the Republic of Yemen was attendant only on its recognition of the government of San’a. After visiting Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and republican Yemen, the League mission returned to Cairo where it reported its findings to Egyptian officials, including the foreign minister. On 1 March 1964 an Egyptian delegation led by Field Marshal Abdel-Hakim Amir, the Egyptian vice-president, visited Saudi Arabia and held talks with Prince King Faisal and other Saudi officials on the Egyptian withdrawal from Yemen and the ending of Saudi aid to the royalists. The deterioration of the situation in Yemen led to renewed attempts to mediate the crisis which were undertaken by various Arab leaders.
