ABSTRACT
Every social movement has its defining moment. The civil rights revolution of the last century, of course, was rich in such moments—Rosa Parks’s refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech, the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education. And these are only the most obvious in a long line of people, events, gestures, and central images marking that historic—and ongoing—struggle.
