ABSTRACT

Drawing on the four sources of relevant literature discussed in the last chapter, the theoretical framework suggests clusters of variables or particular dimensions that affect organizational response to diversity. The framework was intentionally broad, fluid, and flexible during the course of the investigation, continuing to take shape as new dimensions or variables were uncovered through interviews and analysis of documents. Rather than serving as a test of the theoretical framework, my research was an attempt to find new evidence and uncover greater complexity within the framework’s broad dimensions. During the process of conducting the investigation, new organizational and individual-level factors were found to interact with institutional factors to ultimately affect how schools and colleges respond to diversity pressures. These findings yielded a subtler understanding of the phenomena. Figure 1 provides an initial representation of the factors influencing school and college response to diversity.
