ABSTRACT

The School of Public Health was officially established at Lakewood University in 1941. Professional public health education at Lakewood actually dates back to 1911, however, when the regents approved a master’s and doctoral curriculum in public health. The School’s stated mission is the prevention of disease and the promotion of health of all populations, with special reference to poor and minority populations. Five academic departments comprise the School: Biostatistics, Environmental and Industrial Health, Epidemiology, Health Behavior and Health Education, and Health Management and Policy. These departments are heavily decentralized in terms of their policies and practices, curricula, and foci. Despite its decentralization, the School aspires to be a multidisciplinary “crossroads of knowledge from the biological, physical, social, and managerial sciences” (Lakewood University School of Public Health brochure).
