ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the perceptions that high school teachers and counselors had of inner city students played a significant role in the amount of effort they made to help these reach their full academic potential. Higher education in California has changed dramatically over the past few years. Race-based admissions at the University of California system have been effectively eliminated while remedial education at California State University continues to be targeted for system-wide removal. Educators around the country as well as the local media have heralded Rosa and her peers as success stories, and many journal articles and scholarly books have celebrated the accomplishments of similar students. Local funding of public schools has added to this disposition by enabling wealthy parents to buy high quality education through a variety of means. The ones “without” are most often those who are low-income. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
