ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the scientific and technological activities in the region of Guadalajara, for these activities are, in conjunction with the relevant skills analyzed in the previous chapter, essential prerequisites for transfer and assimilation of foreign technology to take place. Thus, it explores the magnitude of the scientific and technological activities in the region of Guadalajara. The chapter is divided into three sections that describe and analyze standard indicators 1 for research & experimental development at each institution and in the region of Guadalajara as a whole. The behavior of the indicators mentioned is contrasted with the past. The first section provides an overview of the extent of the scientific and technological activities by looking at the investment in research and the sources of funding in the past and in the present. In the second section the development in terms of the number of human resources involved in research & development activities by time dedicated and attainment of their last degree is analyzed by comparing the current conditions to those in the past. The third section is dedicated to analyzing the current and past scientific and technological productivity in terms of research projects, publications and technological innovation.
