ABSTRACT

This chapter represents the first of six data analysis chapters of this book. As described in the previous chapter, this study explores the relationship between a faculty member’s orientation toward teaching and their views towards other dimensions of academic life and work. However, before this can be done properly one must first come to terms with an understanding of who teaching-oriented faculty are. Thus, this chapter presents the findings of a multiple regression analysis of the Carnegie international survey of faculty, conducted in order to determine meaningful predictors of strong faculty preference for teaching. The chapter describes the relationship between teaching orientation and demographic background, professional preparation, and academic appointment among faculty data collected by the Carnegie survey.
