ABSTRACT

The main emphasis in British philosophy after the second war thus

shifted to linguistic analysis. But this analysis, like that which preceded it, took many forms. It is hard to give these a historical order, for most of them developed concurrently, and to try to exhaust hem would be idle, since a new one would probably present itself while one's remarks were in the press. All that I shall attempt in what follows is to indicate a few high points in the growth of linguistic analysis, following a historical order where it is discernible and accompanying the narrative with an occasional hiss or cheer.
