ABSTRACT
Subsequent thought-and in particular that of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries - is to be seen as also exemplifying a dialectical process in which the basic problems at issue were elucidated by the dialectical contrast of theories, the later theories both being a response to a better understanding of the problems consequent upon the contrast of earlier theories, and themselves contributing to that better understanding.
