ABSTRACT

In SSA, similar climate conditions sometimes pre vail over enormous distances. As a result, drought may affect several countries simultaneously. Table 38.7 presents recent figures on the impact of the 1991-2 drought on cereal production and people in the ten SADCC countries. Across the region, total cereal production was 6.7 million tons below the annual requirement for the population. This shortfall is believed to have affected an estimated 20 million people across ten countries (SADCC 1992).
