ABSTRACT

Progress is a characteristic and necessary property of science and this is why research into progress is inevitable in foundational analysis. 1 The classic, pre-Kuhnian theories of scientific progress were built on the idea of the accumulation of facts. It was as if people had thought that the ‘wealth of science’ and the advancement of knowledge could be estimated by the number of facts like the ‘wealth of nations’ could be estimated by goods and commodities. The accumulation of facts was estimated to be the essence of scientific advancement, because the new facts were seen as the essence of science. 2
