ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a wide range of items that could be included in multisensory environments (MSE) and outlines possible uses. It is possible to design an environment on a verandah, a hallway, a tent or even outside in the garden. The white room originated in The Netherlands with Hulsegge and Verheul and is the most popular MSE in use. The white room is often used for leisure, relaxation, aromatherapy and massage. Dark rooms were originally developed by professionals working with children with visual impairment, particularly in the area of visual assessment, stimulation and 'training'. Sound rooms were originally developed by professionals working with children with hearing impairment, particularly in the area of auditory assessment, auditory stimulation, auditory 'training', music and speech work.
