Alterations in the Ego-Ideal in Girls in Mid-Adolescence

Humans change, not only nicely, slowly, progressively, but at times extremely rapidly and perhaps not so nicely. At these times growth is not so much a matter of development as it is of maturation; it is not the mere altering of old structure-or, better, system-but the building of a new system on top of the old, supraordinate to it but still in relationship to the older, simpler one. Thus, a new system comes into being and in the process the older one’s functions also become altered (Spruiell, 1990).
