Female Adolescence and the Family: A Historical View

From a historical perspective, the changing position of the female adolescent within the family has followed closely the evolution of attitudes toward gender relations, and toward women and women’s place in society in particular. These shifts mirrored the transition of families in Europe and America from the agricul tural and protoindustrial societies of the period before the mid-18th century to the industrial and urban societies of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Changing views of female adolescence also have accompanied and simultaneously rein forced cultural stereotypes of women in the society at large.
