Effects of Secondary School and College Experiences on Adolescent Female Development
This chapter will consider how features in American, mostly public, secondary schools and coeducational colleges influence developmental changes in adoles cent women. Many diverse factors are involved in the development of all adoles cents to determine the kind of adult each will become. Foremost are genetic and familial influences. These are crucial to the development of a basic sense of self, trust of others, comfortable assertiveness, feeling positive about being female or male, and being able to love and be loved. After the family, the most important influence in the lives of all is experience in schools, public or private.
