Studentsshouldstarttouseitrightfromthebeginningoftheircourse, andIhavefoundthatagoodintroductionistogetstudentstowriteabout theirownlearningexperiencesinschoolandinhighereducation:theirimages ofwhatlearningisallabout;theroleoftheteacherinthelightofthese experiencesandviews;andtheirownaimsforeducation.(YoumayrecallSue Sanders'focus,inChapter3,on'Whatismathematics?Whatislearning?What isteaching?')Theycouldalsobeaskedtorepeatthetaskattheendofthe course,tohelpthemreflectontheirlearningduringtheyear.Thistasksetsthe toneforthewholelog,namelyreflection,evaluationand,asfaraspossible, honesty.Thelastpointisobviouslyconnectedwiththeissueofassessment andwhomightreadthejournal.Theprivacyofthelog,whichallowsitsfullest use,hastobebalancedwithassessmentdemandsoftheHEDepartment.A well-keptlogwillbearichsourceofanecdotesforcriticalanalysis.
