ABSTRACT

The EADI conference has been convened on the general theme of new challenges for European Development Research. It will address two subjects, developments in Europe and sustainable development, both of which will have an important impact on a third, that is, North-South relations. Sustainable development must become an integral part of the economic reconstruction of Europe. All European nations must now join forces in a committed, dedicated effort to halt ecological decline on the European continent. Sustainable development must become an integral part of the economic reconstruction of Europe. The mechanisms of the market should be used to promote sustainable industry and green consumerism in market economies, but such strategies would be of little use in countries where market economies have not yet been established. For development to be sustainable, it must be based on processes that are efficient, equitable, and environmentally sound.
