ABSTRACT

Sustainable development in the situations would suggest appropriate induction of technology, know – how and material capital which can enable the population to reach higher standards of living while maintaining their ‘natural capital’ more or less intact. Apart from the global issues analysed earlier, the strategy of ‘sustainable development’ in the context of developing countries encompasses several issues at the national level. For achieving sustainable development, public policies have also to pay greater attention to the energy needs of the large mass of the poor living in the rural areas. While expansion of electricity to interior rural areas might have helped in satisfying the energy needs for purposes such as lighting, and pumping irrigation water. A thorough change in held attitudes is an essential prerequisite to sustainable development. ‘Sustainable development’ is a concept which has a vast reach.
