ABSTRACT

At last I reached Vaapuru, my destination. A sand-bar half blocking the mouth of the big valley had dammed up the river into a lake, reflecting the thick woods which covered its islands and promontories. I came on it suddenly round a sharp corner, where the path runs on a shelf on the face of the red cliff. Below me on the shore a number of men and women were wading in the sea, hauling at a great fish-net.
