ABSTRACT

Tahiti is shaped like a lady's hand-glass, with the handle to the south-east. I had travelled from Pape-ete, at the top of the mirror, down the eastern side. The greater part of this mainland is called Tahiti-nui. Now I wished to penetrate to the handle, the peninsula of Taiarapu, also called Tahitiiti, where I heard that a richer, deeper, more luxuriant nature throve and a more primitive, simple race of men.
