ABSTRACT

BRAC, the largest NGO in Bangladesh, is a national development agency with multifaceted programmes and activities spread across the country. It has been active since 1972, when relief efforts were begun in the aftermath of the War of Independence. The relief approach was soon replaced by a long-term development approach and currently the objectives of BRAC are poverty alleviation and the empowerment of the very poor, particularly women. BRAC has a target group approach, and those who are functionally landless and/or have to sell their labour comprise the target population.
