ABSTRACT
A German linguist (1840–93). Apart from his work on Chinese, Gabelentz made important contributions to philology, descriptive linguistics and theoretical linguistics; in many respects he anticipated Saussure, who may have been influenced by him. Far in advance of his time, he was long forgotten and has been rediscovered only fairly recently.
