If it looks as if the cargo is going to be collected eventually, the master may arrange for it to be put into a warehouse at the expense of the consignee. In the other examples mentioned above, the cargo may be re-loaded (if, of course, it was initially landed) and shipped to another, convenient, port or indeed returned to the original port of loading. All the costs associated with this constitute backfreight and will be for the account of the merchant.
