ABSTRACT

Normally, an on hire survey, or on hire condition survey, is carried out as soon as practicable. This is done in order to determine the condition of the ship which may subsequently be compared with her condition at the end of the charter. The charter-party specifies a quantity of fuel and diesel estimated to be on board at time of delivery and agreed prices payable by the time charterer to the owner; the quantity of bunkers actually on board is ascertained during the on hire survey and the two sets of figures compared. By agreement, the ship is inspected by one surveyor only or one surveyor for each of the two parties.Which party pays for the survey and whether the time taken counts for the purpose of calculating hire money are matters agreed in the charter-party.
