ABSTRACT

This chapter will have more than its fair share of linguistics. This is because in order to understand how Shakespeare’s grammar works, and how it differs from our own, we will have to lift up the bonnet and look inside the car engine. The ‘mechanic’ who will help us understand what we find there is the linguist. If you are already familiar with the content of a particular section, then the expectation is that you will miss it out. This may apply to the following section, which deals with ways of conveying grammatical information by means of inflexions, function words, and word order.
