ABSTRACT

Advising has always played an important role in the learning experience of students at Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Advising has assisted students in their adjustment to the rigours of a, has supported them in their choice of an academic career path, and more recently supported students in their development and progress as English language learners. The UAE is quite unique in that over 80 per cent of the population is foreign. The advising programme on the men's campus utilises both intrusive and voluntary approaches which are couched within the overall framework of Astin's Student Involvement Theory. Once individuals have been identified via the Student Tracking System (STS) as faltering academically or behaviourally, an intrusive advising approach is implemented. Students, primarily in the underprepared and at-risk groups, interact with advisors who work with them to develop strategies for success and offer additional support.
