ABSTRACT
In the colonial scheme of things, Britain’s imperial interests in India had been among its most important from as early as the seventeenth century. Though it would be the middle of the nineteenth century before the British government laid formal claim to ruling large parts of India, British India was central to Britain’s Empire at a far earlier date.
