ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an understanding of the role of the learning mentor and other support staff in the pastoral support of pupils, and in the provision of targeted Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) work to meet specific needs. PSHE coordinators or learning mentors may well identify children with particular pastoral needs and provide direct planned interventions to support them. This chapter discusses Parental liaison and communication is also crucial in the process of collective pastoral care. Pastoral care in the context of school is concerned with promoting pupils personal and social development and fostering positive attitudes. Pastoral care is an intrinsic part of school life and a core responsibility of every member of staff in the primary school. Nurture groups require specialist funding and the commitment of the head but they might be a realistic solution to including the most vulnerable socially and emotionally in school.
