The previous chapter was particularly heavy on commentary and rela-tively light on practical examples. There was a lot of discussion but not too many exercises. Another way of expressing this is to say there was more telling than showing. In factual or expository writing – essays, articles, reviews and the like1 – this is generally a good thing. In imaginative or creative writing it often isn’t.
