Middles, ends, beginnings: structure
If I were coming into a classroom at this point, rather than the start of thischapter, I would begin by dividing my students into groups of three, and then, before any other discussion, I would set them this task (which of course you can attempt on your own, before you read on):
52. Story vs plot
Within your group discuss the terms ‘story’ and ‘plot’ and attempt to come up with:
a. a one-sentence deﬁnition of ‘story’ b. three characteristics of a story c. a one-sentence deﬁnition of ‘plot’
The middle person in each group is the scribe. After ﬁfteen minutes, report your conclusions to the rest of the class.
