ABSTRACT

Apartheid, literally ‘apartness’ or separateness in the Afrikaans andDutch languages, is the name that was given to a policy of separat-ing people by race, with regard to where they lived, where they went to school, where they worked, and where they died. This policy was introduced in South Africa in 1948 by the National Party government and it remained official practice until the fall from power of that party in 1994.
