ABSTRACT

In his excellent essay supporting this view, Mill makes it clear that correct and detailed information about how the country is run is an important prerequisite for any person involved in taking political decisions and this must surely apply, even if the decision taken is only how to vote every few years. However, all too often the right to know is used as an excuse to publish circulation-boosting journalism. Whether this is designed to appeal to readers’ prurient natures or pander to their prejudices does not seem to matter as long as there is a profit to be made from increasing sales.
