ABSTRACT

In 2005, China’s President Hu Jintao attended ceremonies for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the UN, held in New York City. He delivered a speech entitled ‘Making Great Efforts to Build a Harmonious World with Longlasting Peace and Common Prosperity,’ parts of which are extracted below from a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Beijing, PRC. Since China ia a permanent member of the UN Security Council, his suggestion that there be greater representation on the Council by small or mediumsized countries takes on special significance.
