Introduction

This work, King James’s Bible of 1611, has been the most widely known, and most widely owned, book in the English-speaking world from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. Its stories, its sayings and its language became part of the modern idiom, and remain so to this day. It provided imaginative food for many people who were poorly supplied from other sources.
