ABSTRACT
Most biographical research is conducted by the use of the in-depth interview but personal narratives can also be found in letters, diaries, photographs and other personal documents. Diaries are also a potentially useful method of data collection. Content analysis is an approach to data collection and data analysis in which the meaning of a text emerges systematically. Two of the most common methods of the systematic interpretation of a text are semiology and content analysis. Angs methodology demonstrates many of the advantages of using letters as a method of data collection in research projects. The aim of visual research methods is to gain an understanding of social life by exploring the significance or meaning of images or objects with the respondent. Photographs of the respondents primary school were used in the research process to assist high school students to make connections with their past experiences.
