ABSTRACT

Kyriacou (1998) suggests that planning has five purposes that help a teacher focus on what they are teaching and why they are using the activities they have chosen. However, although I agree with the principles that he lists, I feel that planning can be more focused and have a threefold purpose:

3. To have a record of the teaching that has occurred throughout a child’s education for accountability to the stakeholders such as the children, the school, the parents and Ofsted.

Once a teacher is aware of these purposes, they should begin to see that their planning is not only an important document for them personally, on a practical day-to-day level, but is also a public record and as such should be detailed and clear to follow.
